At the August 28 Public Works Meeting, Council was presented with a request from the Lakeland Trailer Club for gravel for the road they built to their lease at NW 29-60-11-W4 on Floatingstone Lake.  Council tabled a decision until Public Works could go look at the road.  Attached are pictures of the road.  The first part of the road is to a gas well.  The last parts of the road could use some gravel.  It would require approximately 60 yards of gravel.

Cost for 60 yards of gravel $1300 - 20 yards @ $15 and 40 yards @ $25

A county ratepayer is requesting to hunt on County land, being NW 24-58-7-W4.  This land is leased by the Elk Point Elks Club and it is also used the Boy Scouts.  See the attached map.  The Scouts have a camp set up in the area indicated in red and the Elks have a camp in area indicated in orange.  The Boy Scouts use the camp during the winter months.

In June 2017 the County tendered a standing hay crop on NW 17-59-11-W4 - 18 acres.  It was tendered for 2017 only.  The standing hay crop was not tendered for 2018.  Councillor Hedrick has received inquiries about this hay crop.

Councillor Younghans will provide Council with an update.

Further to Section 6 of Policy HR-30, Statutory and Other Declared Holidays, the County will provide employees with a minimum of four consecutive days off in December including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and up to two floater days.  The exact dates of this period will be determined annually by Council Resolution.

RMA Insurance and Kyle Attanasio met with the Mallaig Ag Society on September 20th to talk about the forthcoming increase in their property insurance premiums from $22,000 to $50,500 per year.  The $50,500 will cover the arena, curling rink and hall.  The group discussed options to decrease the costs - including increasing their deductible and reducing coverage from full replacement to functional replacement.  Kyle will provide further information to Council at the meeting.

Civil Forfeiture grants are available through the Alberta Solicitor General for local crime prevention projects.  $2.5 million in funding is available.  Time-limited grant funding between $50,000 and $200,000 per project is available for projects lasting up to 2 years. Funding will support innovative, promising and proven practices.  The funded projects must focus on:

  • services that directly prevent at-risk individuals from becoming involved in criminal activity and/or
  • crime prevention planning initiatives, such as coordination plans to deter rural crime.

FCSS will be applying for a Civil Forfeiture Grant for an outreach worker to work with "at risk" youth in the Town of Elk Point and surrounding areas and help them access resoures as well as advocate on their behalf.  FCSS is looking for a letter of support to accompany their grant application.

The LICA Annual General Meeting will be held October 9, 2018 in Bonnyville.  The evening will start at 6:00 p.m. followed by the guest speaker Darcy Shyry of Alberta Community Bat Program.

Kaitlyn Kenney will be presenting proposed plans for the office design.
